To the left, you will see quite a complicated handcut stained glass mosaic. For beginners it is recommended to try much simpler designs than this, for example using an old piece of rectangular picture frame glass to work on.
Even the most simple of designs can be quite effective though, just take a look at this one color blue mosaic mandala made from randomly cut recycled glass. Because there is only one color it was very easy to assemble, the only pattern that had to be followed was the curved edging pieces done in a slightly lighter shade of blue glass.

As you can see both of these example incorporate a dark almost black background effect. This is actually black tiling grout which has been pressed into the gaps left between the pieces of glass mosaic.
Darker grout colors help to show off the bright vibrant colors if the colored glass to best effect. It creates a stone like feeling of solidity in the piece.
You will also see both pieces have been surrounded by metal. This is actually known as zinc 'came' and is commonly used in stained glass to edge the glass panels and to lend strength to the structure of the window. A special device known as a 'came bender'
was used to turn the original straight edged zinc into a circle. The two ends where then soldered once it had been fitted around the mosaic.
